At the end of June, I made a massive decision. I decided it was time to take the plunge and resign from my part time job so that I can focus on my macrame business full time.
My little girl is starting school in September so this seems like the right time.
I absolutely love what I do, and it fill me with so much joy to create beautiful items. But the only thing that I feel is looming over me, is switching my head from hobbyist to business.
Whilst my macrame has been purely a hobby, I’ve been able to create what I like, when I like. Everything I make is down to my own inspiration and my own likes, but now I’m slowly realising, I’ll need to make what sells.
To be a viable business, I clearly need to be able to make money, and this is a world that is completely alien to me.

The piece pictured above is my latest piece; it was born out of a free three day challenge run by Isabella Strambio. I picked the colours I liked and decided to use some bamboo string for extra softness, shine and luxury.
I’ve had lots of positive feedback and it has been really well received, but one comment really shock me.
A person made a comment that “the colours were bang on trend” and this stopped me in my tracks. You mean there are trending colours?! Not only that, there is a colour of the year?!
It really goes to show how much I still need to learn in the business world. Now of course, it makes sense. Of course there are trending colours as well as trending themes, products and hashtags. It just never occurred to me to be aware of them.
I was very honest in my reply to this comment and told them it had just been a happy accident, but it’s definitely started the cogs turning in my head.
From now on, I’ll be trying to work out how to change my head from passionate hobbyist, to successful business owner!
